EXTRACTIONS +

WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL

Extractions

Teeth may be lost for several different reasons such as:

  • Trauma

  • Decay

  • Infection of the nerve within the tooth

  • Infection of the gum and bone surround the tooth

Extractions are conducted routinely in the clinic under local anaesthetic. Your dentist will discuss with you the level of complexity of the extraction/s required and explain any further concerns you need to be aware of, before proceeding. For our nervous patients, there are several anti-anxiety options available and our friendly team members will be happy to discuss these with you in person.

Replacing The Missing Tooth

While some people adapt well to the space left behind following the extraction of a tooth, others are unable to get used to it and want the gap filled. There are both cosmetic and functional issues associated with missing teeth.

A missing front tooth can make you more self-conscious of your smile. Remaining teeth may be forced to take on excessive forces due to the loss of an important chewing tooth. Teeth in front, behind, above or below the missing tooth can (but not always will) lean, rotate or drift into the space. This can result in problems with your bite, or become an issue in the future when you do decide to fill in the space.

As a result, we encourage our clients to be educated about the consequences of tooth loss and the various tooth replacement options whenever applicable. Each option has its risks, advantages and disadvantages, both in the short and long term. Your dentist will give you more information on the relevant options so you can be confident about the decisions you make.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth are the 3rd molars to develop in each quarter of your mouth. They may erupt with little to no consequences. However, there are several issues frequently associated with wisdom teeth. These include:

  • Inadequate space to fully erupt

  • Impaction (pressing of teeth against another tooth, bone or gum)

  • Erupting in incorrect/improper alignment to the other teeth

  • Eruption pain and discomfort, headaches, jaw aches, gum aches

  • Infections

  • Dental decay of itself or adjacent teeth

Here at Livingston Dental Care, we routinely perform the removal of wisdom teeth. There are many reasons why people opt to have their wisdom teeth removed in the chair. Often, it makes better financial sense (it is usually significantly cheaper), or it is more convenient (there is greater choice of dates and times).

Some people prefer to be awake during the procedure as they prefer feeling more ‘in control’ and aware of what is happening. Of course, there are also many who prefer to have this done under i.v. (twilight) sedation. Whatever your preference is, we welcome you to come in for a consultation during which we can explain your options in more details and lead you in the best direction with a personalized care plan.
